How to reach us in the event of a claim

The best method for reporting a flood loss is to contact our Claims Department at:

Email: claims@nfsmt.com
Phone: (800)759-8656
Fax: (406)257-1629

You may also contact us at (800) 862-2070, and we will initiate the claims process with you.

Having your Flood Insurance Policy Number will expedite the call; however, it is not required.

Helpful Information

After reporting the loss, here is some additional information you should know:

  • The insured has 60 days to file a written Proof of Loss.
  • Take pictures of damaged property before throwing it away.
  • Keep all financial records such as receipts.
  • Go room-to-room to document all damaged items. Take pictures.
  • Remove any contents that are waterlogged (e.g., drapes, upholstered furniture, clothes, and bedding).
  • Dry out the damaged rooms with fans (if no standing water) and open windows.
  • For commercial losses: for any perishable inventory that was destroyed, the insured not only needs to provide written Proof of Loss, but also a "Destroy" or "Condemnation" order from the local health department.
  • The insured should mark water level on the wall.
  • Begin to clean and dry out, and take pictures of the damage. Keep a piece of the carpet and leave the damaged belongings on the property for the adjuster.
  • Take steps to prevent mold growth by drying out your flood-damaged home. Mold is covered by the NFIP if caused by the flood, but not if allowed to grow after the flood when the insured could have prevented it. Wiping surfaces down with 10% bleach solution is helpful.
  • Document your loss with pictures, receipts, and warrantees.
  • Make a record of everyone with whom you have talked - names, phone numbers, and dates they contacted you.
